Lutheran Scholar Moller Died in Thailand

M?LLER DIED IN THAILAND

The Rev. Michael F. M?ller, a pastor of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg, Germany, died from
injuries received in a traffic accident while on sabbatical in
Bangkok, Thailand. During the brief "Republic of Pastors"
that succeeded the communist government in 1990, M?ller
served on the diplomatic staff of the German Democratic
Republic (G.D.R.) and was the Ambassador-designate to the
United States of America. Since 1990 he's been a professor
of systematic theology in the Lutheran Theological Seminary
at Philadelphia, a seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America. M?ller served on the ELCA's Task Force
on Peace, which helped the church study Lutheran
understandings of international peace and prepare its 1995
social statement on the topic. He died March 15, four days
after his 40th birthday. Born in L?cknitz, G.D.R., M?ller
earned advanced theological degrees from the University of
Leipzig. He was an instructor in the Theological Seminary in
Leipzig, 1980-85; pastor of St. George Lutheran Church,
Wismar, 1985-89; visiting professor at Trinity Lutheran
Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, 1986-87; and professor of
philosophy and religion at Augustana College, Sioux Falls,
S.D., 1989-90. M?ller is survived by his wife, Fotina, and
their children, Alexandra and Peter.
