Lutheran Women Endow 'Katie's Fund'

June 12, 1997

LUTHERAN WOMEN ENDOW 'KATIE'S FUND'

Fifteen women from across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have responded to
"Katie's Fund" with gifts totaling more than $3,700. Katie's Fund, established to mark the tenth
anniversary of Women of the ELCA, is a permanent endowment fund set up to provide
programs, resources and opportunities for women in the areas of global sharing, leadership
development and faith. The fund is named after Katharina "Katie" von Bora, wife of 16th
century German reformer Martin Luther. "Katharina von Bora is such a wonderful example of
the wise steward of God's resources," said Terry L. Bowes, interim executive director, Women
of the ELCA. "She most certainly was a creative and effective manger of the household budget.
She also had an entrepreneurial spirit, creating incomes from her roles as hostess to boarders
and laundress for students she and Martin hosted in their home," said Bowes. "Katie was very
much a woman of her day -- a woman who prepared for tomorrow. Women of the ELCA can be
proud to have Katie's Fund named after her," Bowes said. Income from the endowment will be
used to ensure women's "preparedness for ministries in the 21st century." Women of the ELCA
became an official organization July 11-14, 1987.
