MUHLENBERG COLLEGE RECEIVES LARGEST GIFT IN ITS
HISTORY
Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa., received a
$6.5 million gift from a
friend of the college. Muhlenberg is one of 28
colleges and universities
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The
gift is the largest in
Muhlenberg's history and one of the largest ever
to a non-profit
organization or higher education institution in
the Lehigh Valley. "The
donor, who is determined to remain unknown, has
been watching Muhlenberg
and its progress and wants to support what is
happening at the college,"
said Arthur R. Taylor, president of the college.
The gift's purpose as
stated in the grant is to stimulate support for
three capital projects at
the college. They include an expansion to the
Dorothy H. and Dexter F.
Baker Center for the Arts, a new academic
building, athletic field
renovations and facility improvements. The
combined building projects
total $22.5 million. The $6.5 million gift, along
with a $1 million bonus
if certain fund-raising goals are met, enables the
college to proceed with
its fund-raising campaign in conjunction with its
master building plan.
"We have begun our sesquicentennial celebration
and this extraordinary gift
is an exciting way to start the next 150 years,"
said Dr. David M. Long
Jr., chairperson of the Muhlenberg's Board of
Trustees.
