CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Robert A. Rimbo, 47, was elected bishop of the Southeast Michigan Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on May 2. He received 199 votes to 188 for the Rev. John H.K. Schreiber, 36, on the fifth ballot during the synod's assembly in Novi, Mich.
Rimbo, Antioch Lutheran Church, Farmington Hills, Mich., will succeed the Rev. J. Philip Wahl, 62, who has served as the synod's bishop since August 1991 and plans to return to parish ministry. Rimbo served as Wahl's assistant from 1991 to 1996.
Schreiber is currently an assistant to Bishop Wahl, as is the Rev. Jack E. Eggleston, 45, whose name was also on the fourth ballot of the election for bishop. There were 71 names on the nominating ballot.
A 1976 graduate of Christ Seminary-Seminex, St. Louis, Rimbo served two years as executive assistant to the project director of the Inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship, New York, which produced the Lutheran Book of Worship. He was pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Valley Stream, N.Y., 1978-1982, and St. James Lutheran Church, Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., 1982-1991.
