CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Dr. Daniel C. Tsui, a graduate of Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., received the Nobel Prize for Physics. Augustana is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Tsui is the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Science.
Along with the $978,000 cash award, Tsui is sharing the honor with two other professors for their discoveries of how subatomic particles can behave like a fluid.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' citation notes that their work "led to yet another breakthrough in our understanding of quantum physics and to the development of new theoretical concepts of significance in many branches of modern physics."
Born in Henan, China, in 1939, Tsui came to Augustana in 1958. He graduated in 1961 with a degree in mathematics and membership in Augustana's Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
In 1981 Tsui and his wife created the Daniel and Linda Tsui Scholarship at Augustana College. The scholarship is intended to assist international students from developing nations who have financial needs. Linda also attended Augustana and studied elementary education.
"His intellect and discipline represent the very best of what we hope for in the students who pursue studies in the sciences at Augustana," said Dr. Thomas Tredway, president of the college. Tsui received Augustana's Outstanding Alumni Award in 1989.
