New Vice President Joins ELCA Board of Pensions

March 12, 1999

MINNEAPOLIS (ELCA) -- The Rev. Ronald T. Glusenkamp joined the Board of Pensions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) as vice president of Customer Outreach, effective March 1.
As vice president, Glusenkamp will oversee efforts that build and strengthen customer relationships, including the Board's communication, education, marketing and publication areas.
"Ron brings to us extensive experience as a pastor, media trainer and marketer that will be essential in carrying out our mission to enhance lives and support the well-being of the ELCA," said John G. Kapanke, president of the Minneapolis-based Board of Pensions.
Known as "The Sign Man" in the St. Louis area, Glusenkamp's role as media consultant, marketer and speaker has grown over his 18 years in parish ministries.
He is author of the recently published book, "Signs For These Times," which offers churches insight on how they can use their outdoor signs to attract visitors.
Prior to joining the board, Glusenkamp served as senior pastor for 11 years at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, St. Louis.
He served as pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kansas City, Mo., 1983-88, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Wichita, Kan., 1981-83.
In addition to his pastoral duties, Glusenkamp was a media consultant for the ELCA's Central States Synod (covering Kansas and Missouri) and media training associate for a nonprofit division of MediaMasters in St. Louis.
Glusenkamp, 45, earned a bachelor's degree from Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1976, and a master of divinity degree from Christ Seminary-Seminex, St. Louis in 1980.
With $4.8 billion under management, the nonprofit Board of Pensions provides pension and other benefits for 48,000 pastors and lay employees of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Based in Chicago, the ELCA has 5.2 million members and is the fifth-largest Protestant church in the United States and Caribbean.
