WASHINGTON (ELCA) The Religion Communicators Council (RCC) gave one of its top awards to the producer of "MOSAIC," the video magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), at the DeRose-Hinkhouse = Memorial Communication Awards dinner here March 18.
The RCC gave its "Best of Class" award for non-broadcast audio and video to Tim Frakes, associate director for internal church communication, ELCA Department for Communication, for the Spring 1998 issue of "MOSAIC." The council also gave Frakes its Excellence Award in the Documentary/Educational Video Category for the same entry. Frakes=20 has been producer of MOSAIC for five years.
"Wow!" said judge Andrew Rawls, director of media services, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., of Frakes' work. "This program is a delight! Upbeat, informative, balanced ... pure inspiration ... compels us to reach higher. Seeing this makes me want to be a Lutheran."
The RCC, a professional organization for religion communicators, gave several more awards to ELCA communicators. Award winners included:
-- Susan Greeley, director/producer for "Lutheran Vespers," ELCA Department for Communication, received the Merit Award for "Lutheran Vespers Holiday Specials." The award was given in the Broadcast and Cable Audio/Video category. "Lutheran Vespers" is a radio ministry of the ELCA. The Rev. Walt Wangerin, Lutheran author, storyteller and lecturer, is the program's speaker.
-- Julie Baska, communications director, ELCA Southeastern Minnesota Synod, was honored in two categories for the synod's newsletter, "Tributaries." Baska won the Excellence Award for local and regional newspapers in the Periodicals category. Her work was also given a Merit Award for overall publication design in the Graphic, Design, Art and Photography category.
-- Nancy Stelling, editor, Sue Edison-Swift, managing editor, and Kate S. Elliott, associate editor, of the Women of the ELCA monthly publication, "Lutheran Woman Today," received the Excellence Award for a series of magazine articles called "Possessions." The award was presented in the Writing for Periodicals category.
-- Linda Post Bushkofsky, an ELCA member employed by the Synod of Lakes and Prairies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), received an Excellence Award for brochures for the publication "Mission Brochure."=20 She also received a Merit Award for overall publication design for "Seeing with New Eyes of Justice" in the Graphic Design, Art and Photography category.
The DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards are given annually at RCC's convention to active members who demonstrate excellence in religious communications and public relations. They are given in memory of Victor DeRose and Paul M. Hinkhouse, both leading lithographers in New York City and longtime friends of RCC.
In addition to the awards, the Rev. Eric C. Shafer, director of the ELCA Department for Communication, was elected RCC vice president. =20 Melissa O. Ramirez, assistant director for news and information, ELCA Department for Communication, was elected to a four-year term on the RCC Board of Governors.
