ELCA Women Adopt Budget in Attempt to 'Live God's Justice'

July 11, 1999

ST. LOUIS (ELCA) -- Delegates of the Fourth Triennial Convention of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) approved a $4,722,743 budget for the organization's fiscal year 2000.
The Women of the ELCA's convention is meeting here July 8-11 at the America's Center. The organization's three-year theme, "Live God's Justice," is unveiled at the convention amid Bible study, keynote addresses, workshops, business sessions and elections.
The budget for the year 2000 is built around the executive board's response to the Women of the ELCA's purpose statement and "end goals," said Nancy Hoffman, executive board treasurer. Four goals lifted up by the organization are anti-racism, spirituality, stewardship and worship.
Women of the ELCA is "called" to use its resources according to its triennial theme, "Live God's Justice," said Hoffman. Described by the executive board's budget review committee, the budget represents the organization's "bold yet humble walk."
The 2000 budget plan includes a gift of $1 million to the ELCA for its ministries around the world. Women of the ELCA budgets a financial gift to the ELCA every year. It has given more than $11 million to the ELCA in the last 11 years.
The 2000 budget plan includes the planning and initial expenses of the Fifth Triennial Convention to be held in Philadelphia in July 2002.
