CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. David L. Miller has been nominated to a four-year term as the next editor of The Lutheran, magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The magazine's advisory committee, acting as a search committee, initiated Miller's nomination on July 13. The committee interviewed several candidates and offered a single nominee for the post of editor. The nomination proceeded to the executive committee of the ELCA Church Council on July 21, which forwarded the nomination to the full council.
The full council will meet Aug. 15-16 in Denver and will consider transmitting Miller's nomination to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly, which meets Aug. 16-22 in Denver. The assembly is expected to vote Aug. 20; no nominations are taken from the floor.
The nomination and election process is outlined in the ELCA Constitution.
If the assembly elects Miller, he will succeed the Rev. Edgar R. Trexler on Nov. 1. Trexler is retiring after 34 years with The Lutheran.
Miller, 46, is senior editor of The Lutheran and has been on the staff of the periodical since its beginning in 1988. His responsibilities include editing the In Focus and Living the Faith sections of the magazine. Prior to joining the staff, he was pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran, Olathe, Kan., and Salem Lutheran, Superior, Neb.
Raised in Warren, Ill., Miller is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., with a degree in psychology. He graduated from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, in 1980.
Miller has traveled widely for the magazine, including recent reports from Macedonia about Kosovo refugees, and about church involvement after the Littleton, Colo., school shootings. His first book, Friendship with Jesus, is being published by Augsburg Fortress Publishers.
The Lutheran is delivered by mail each month to 707,000 addresses. Its readership is more than 1.3 million or about one-fourth of the ELCA's 5.2 million members, making it the largest denominational periodical in the United States.
The magazine's editorial policy is to present "secular and spiritual topics through the perspective of the Lutheran faith." Its pages include news, features, columns, letters, profiles, humor, art and editorials.
