ELCA Assembly Receives Slate of Candidates

August 17, 1999

DENVER (ELCA) -- The Nominating Committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) offered the voting members of the 1999 Churchwide Assembly a slate of nearly 200 nominees for 93 positions -- 11 on the ELCA Church Council and 82 positions on ELCA boards and committees. Those elected at this assembly will serve into the next century.
The churchwide assembly, the chief legislative authority of the ELCA, is meeting Aug. 16-22 here at the Colorado Convention Center. There are more than 2,500 people participating, including 1,039 ELCA voting members. The theme for the biennial assembly is "Making Christ Known: Hope for a New Century."
"We looked at 550 nominees and matched their qualifications to the representational principles required for each position, including experience and expertise, geographical, synodical and age distribution considerations," said the Rev. Kirk W. Bish, chair of the ELCA Nominating Committee.
Nominations were sought in November 1998 from the 65 synods of the ELCA, synodical officers, unit board chairs and executive directors, members of Church Council and members of the nominating committee.
