CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Luther Institute has named five men and a choir to receive its 1999 Wittenberg Awards on Oct. 23. The focus of the 1999 Wittenberg Awards is "to recognize a few individuals and organizations who have made and are making major contributions to Lutheran Church music."
This year's recipients include: + Dr. Timothy Albrecht, professor, organist and composer, Emory University, Atlanta + The Rev. Robert Bergt, director of The American Kantorei, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis + Egil Hovland, composer, organist and church musician, Fredrikstad, Norway + Dr. Weston Noble, professor of music and director of The Nordic Choir, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa + Dr. Carl Schalk, professor emeritus and composer, Concordia College, River Forest, Ill.
The St. Olaf Choir, under the direction of Dr. Anton Armstrong, received its Wittenberg Award in a special presentation May 22 at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. Luther and St. Olaf are colleges of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The five awards to individuals will be presented Oct. 23 during a gala concert at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, Washington, D.C. The concert will feature Albrecht and Hovland at the organ and the American Kantorei.
The concert will be underwritten by Robert and Lori Duesenberg and Richard and Phyllis Duesenberg. The awards are made possible by a grant from Lutheran Brotherhood, a fraternal benefits society based in Minneapolis.
The Luther Institute is an independent center for laity and clergy fostering education and research on social, educational and ethical issues in the public sphere. Based in Washington, the institute conducts several programs to promote its mission and to encourage service to church and society.
The Wittenberg Awards were established in 1990 to recognize Lutherans from around the world for outstanding service to church and society.
The 1998 Wittenberg Award recipients were Bishop April Ulring Larson, the Honorable Eckhard Naumann, Shirley D. Peterson Esq. and Willmar Thorkelson.
