Bruce Halverson Elected President of ELCA Augustana College

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Dr. Bruce R. Halverson, Tallahassee, Fla., will become the 22nd president of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., Aug. 1. Augustana is one of 28 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Halverson succeeds Dr. Ralph H. Wagoner, who is retiring this summer as president of Augustana after seven years.
Since July 1999, Halverson has served as dean of Florida State University's School of Theater, Tallahassee. There he oversees the activities of more than 50 faculty and staff, 75 teaching and graduate assistants and 450 undergraduate and graduate students.
From 1997 to 1999, Halverson was artistic director for the University of Illinois' Department of Theater, Urbana-Champaign, Ill. He was director of theater at Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y., from 1989 to 1997. He also served as chair for Ithaca's Department of Theater Arts.
From 1979 to 1983 and again from 1987 to 1989, Halverson was chair of Performing Arts at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y. He also served as assistant dean and director for general education there from 1983 to 1985.
Halverson was vice president for development and institutional relations at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Rochester, N.Y., from 1985 to 1987. He served as director of theater at Dennison University, Granville, Ohio, from 1976 to 1979.
In 1966 Halverson earned a bachelor of arts degree in speech and drama at Augustana College. He graduated there with cum laude distinction. He received an Alumni Achievement Award from the college in 1990.
Halverson earned a doctorate in theater history from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1971.
Halverson and his wife, Nancy, attend Grace Lutheran Church, Tallahassee. They have one son, Cole.
