CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Mission Builders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) completed 10 projects in 2000 and has applications for another 12 in 2001, according to the program director, Dean Hiner, North Platte, Neb. Mission Builders builds or rehabilitates church-related facilities.
Since 1986 about 175 Mission Builders have completed 96 projects in 34 of the ELCA's 65 synods. Builders have also worked on several Lutheran Disaster Response projects following hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters.
Mission Builders are Christians with considerable construction skills and other "handy" folks helping congregations, schools, camps and social ministry organizations of the ELCA build their facilities. Most are retired people, but others take an extended vacation with their families, willing to share their skills and faith and to work for minimum wage.
In 2000 Mission Builders completed 10 projects: St. John Lutheran Church, Elwood, Ind.; Shalom Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Minn.; Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Chapel, Copper Harbor, Mich.; Messiah Lutheran Church, Mountain Iron, Minn.; Living God Lutheran Church, Honey Brook, Pa.; Lutheran Church by the Lake, McCormick, S.C.; Trinity Lutheran Church, Platte, S.D.; Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Coloma, Wis.; Bethany Lutheran Church, Rudolph, Wis.; and Zion Lutheran Church, Superior, Wis.
Hiner said the following applications are on hand with Mission Builders for projects in 2001: Christ the King Lutheran Church, Cumming, Ga.; Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Indianapolis; All Saints Lutheran Church, Highland, Mich.; Littlefork Lutheran Church, Littlefork, Minn.; First English Lutheran Church, Menahga, Minn.; Hosanna! Lutheran Church, Liberty, Mo.; Redeemer Lutheran Church, New Paltz, N.Y.; Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Red Oak (Lancaster), Texas; St. John Lutheran Church, Chehalis, Wash.; Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Eagle River, Wis.; Hainesville Lutheran Church, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; and Trinity Lutheran Church, Washington Island, Wis.
