Associated Church Press Honors Lutheran Publications

MINNEAPOLIS (ELCA) -- Communicators and publications associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) were recognized by the Associated Church Press (ACP), which presents awards for excellence in editing, writing, photography, graphic design and electronic publishing. The ACP, an 85-year-old professional association, represents some 175 religious publications with a combined circulation of 28 million.
Twenty ACP awards were given to Lutheran journalists and publications at an April 24 awards banquet here, part of the ACP's annual convention. The awards were given to: + The Lutheran, the magazine of the ELCA, which won eight awards, including an Award of Merit for Best in Class among denominational general interest magazines. The Lutheran was also honored for its mission statement, coverage of a convention or meeting by a magazine (2000 ELCA Youth Gathering), theme issue ("Ten Ways to Improve Your Prayer Life"), reader response ("Memos to God"), theological reflection ("Politics, Christian-ly"), best seasonal article ("Noah is his Name") and humor with text ("Voyeur Vision"). The Rev. David L. Miller is editor. + Seeds for the Parish, a resource publication for congregational and synod leaders published by the ELCA Department for Communication, which received an Award of Merit for Best in Class in the newsletter category. Katherine S. Elliott is editor. + Southern Bulletin, published by Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C., received an Honorable Mention for Best in Class in the newsletter category. The Rev. Marguerite M. Rourk is editor. + Lutheran Partners, a magazine of the ELCA Division for Ministry, received five awards. It was cited in categories for feature article ("Preaching and the Post-Modern Condition"), letters to the editor, humor ("Sola Blabatorium: The True Essence of Lutheran Worship"), biblical interpretation ("Jesus Victor") and cover. The Rev. Carl E. Linder is editor. + Lutheran Woman Today, a publication of Women of the ELCA, received two awards for professional resource ("Who, Me? Ordained?") and biblical interpretation ("The Psalms and Wrestling"). Nancy J. Stelling was editor through Dec. 1, 2000; Nancy J. Goldberger succeeded her. + ELCA News & Information received an award for news service convention or meeting coverage (2000 ELCA Youth Gathering). John R. Brooks is director. + Metro Lutheran, a Lutheran newspaper that serves Lutherans primarily in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., got two awards. It was cited for a news story ("Eden Prairie Congregation Removes Members from Rolls for Supporting Gays") and interview (the Rev. Walter M. Wangerin Jr., author and speaker for Lutheran Vespers, a radio ministry of the ELCA). The Rev. Michael L. Sherer is editor. The ACP recognized publications and journalists in 43 categories of religious journalism.
