April 30, 2001

MINNEAPOLIS (ELCA) -- Communicators and publications of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) were honored April 26 by the Religion Communicators Council (RCC) during its annual meeting here. The RCC, a professional communication organization, presented nine of its DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards for materials produced in 2000 by ELCA communicators.
DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given annually for excellence in writing, graphic design, art and photography, audio and video productions, public relations and advertising, and electronic communication. The awards are named for the late Victor DeRose and the late Paul M. Hinkhouse, longtime RCC friends who shared a strong interest in communication excellence.
ELCA churchwide communicators and publications honored by the RCC were:
+ Seeds for the Parish, a resource publication for congregational and synod leaders published by the ELCA Department for Communication, which received an Award of Excellence for best national newspaper. Katherine S. Elliott is editor.
+ Lutheran Woman Today (LWT), the magazine of Women of the ELCA. LWT received awards of excellence for best black and white photography ("Relationships That Renew"), and best color photography ("Bold in the Name"). LWT also received an award of merit for a cover design ("Rest"). The awards cited Nancy J. Stelling, former editor, and Deborah Bogaert, managing editor.
+ Lutheran Vespers, a radio ministry of the ELCA. It received an Award of Merit for broadcast ("Praying Out Loud Together"). Susan V. Greeley is director/producer for Lutheran Vespers, ELCA Department for Communication.
The RCC honored publications and communicators with ELCA-related institutions. They were:

+ Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (Pa.), which received a "shoestring award" for excellence in communication with a limited budget. The award was given to "Seminary Sunday," Mark A. Staples, editor.
RCC is a nonprofit organization created to serve the religious community -- local, national and international. It promotes high standards for religious public relations and communication, provides training and continuing education for people engaged in communication on behalf of religious bodies and institutions, and encourages fellowship among professional religion communicators. Founded in 1929, it is the nation's oldest religious public relations association. ---
