CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Twenty-seven faculty and staff from 15 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) were awarded grants of up to $1,200 each for continuing education during 2001.
The grants were awarded through the Administrative Study Grants program of the ELCA Division for Higher Education and Schools (DHES). The program funds 80 percent of the award and the recipient's institution funds the remaining 20 percent. Of the $31,900 in study grants awarded, $25,520 was given by DHES.
"The Administrative Study Grants program helps nurture faculty and staff excellence and reflects a shared commitment between the ELCA Division for Higher Education and Schools and the 28 ELCA colleges and universities," said Arne Selbyg, ELCA director for colleges and universities, DHES. "We are very pleased to join the administration of ELCA colleges and universities in support of the continued education of faculty and staff."
Priority was given to applicants in a study program leading toward a degree, Selbyg explained. Most grant recipients are working toward a Ph.D. or the equivalent terminal degree for their field, he said. There were 34 applications considered, Selbyg added.
