Miller Re-Elected Bishop of ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Marcus J. Miller was re-elected May 18 to a six-year term as bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Miller, 54, was re- elected at the synod assembly at the John S. Knight Center, Akron, Ohio.
Assembly voting members chose Miller on the first ballot for bishop, giving him 328 of 411 votes. Others who received votes on the first ballot were the Rev. Bruce G. Trethaway, Divinity Lutheran Church, Parma Heights, Ohio, 12 votes; the Rev. Paul L. Myers, Jr., Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Massillon, Ohio, 10 votes; and the Rev. R. Langley Collins, Faith Lutheran Church, Massillon, Ohio, 10 votes. There were 29 nominees who received votes on the first ballot.
Miller's new term begins Sept. 1.
Miller, who was born in Wyandotte, Mich., earned a bachelor's degree in 1967 at Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind. He earned a master of divinity degree in 1971 at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and a doctoral degree in 1981 at New York Theological Seminary, New York, N.Y.
Miller served for several years as pastor at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Brooklyn, Ohio, before he was elected bishop in 1995.
He and his wife Katherine are parents of two grown children.
