Warren Re-Elected Bishop of ELCA Southeastern Synod

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Ronald B. Warren was re-elected to a six-year term as bishop of the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), May 27 at the synod assembly May 25- 27 in Atlanta. Warren, 56, has been serving as bishop of the synod since 1995. Warren was re-elected on the fifth ballot for bishop with 263 votes over the Rev. David M. Hood, Christ Lutheran Church, Clarksville, Tenn., with 154 votes. Warren led on the fourth ballot with 263 votes, over Hood with 146, and the Rev. John M. Weber, Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, Peachtree City, Ga., with 45 votes. There were 39 nominees who received votes on the first ballot. Warren's new term begins Sept. 1. Warren, a native of Sandusky, Ohio, was assistant to the bishop for the ELCA Southeastern Synod before he became bishop. He served as pastor in Lutheran congregations in Memphis, Tenn., Franklin, Wis., Janesville, Wis., and a two-point parish in Avoca, Wis., and Lone Rock, Wis. Warren was ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 1970. Warren earned a doctor of ministry degree from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago (LSTC), a master of divinity from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, and a bachelor's degree from Capital University, Columbus. LSTC and Trinity Seminary are two of eight ELCA seminaries; Capital University is one of 28 ELCA higher education institutions. In 1996 he was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Newberry College, Newberry, S.C., an ELCA institution. Warren and his wife Neva have two grown children. The ELCA Southeastern Synod has 62,217 baptized members in 179 congregations. Its offices are located in Atlanta. -- -- -- [*Elaine S.
