NEW YORK (ELCA) -- Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) communicators and publications were honored April 18 by the Religion Communicators Council (RCC) during its annual meeting here. The RCC, a national professional communication organization, presented 11 of its DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards to ELCA communicators for materials produced in 2001.
DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given in 37 categories annually for excellence in writing, graphic design, art and photography, audio and video productions, public relations and advertising, and electronic communication. The awards are named for the late Victor DeRose and the late Paul M. Hinkhouse, lithographers and longtime RCC friends who shared a strong interest in communication excellence.
Lutherans won three awards of excellence, the top award in each category. Melissa Ramirez, ELCA Department for Communication, Chicago, was the award of excellence winner in the newspaper feature category. She won for her feature, "Farm Workers Weather Storms of Immigration and Indifference." Jonathan Freirichs, Lutheran World Relief, Baltimore, was the award of excellence winner for posters titled "Organizational Vision" and "Where Do Quilts Go?"
John L. Peterson, FaithandValues.com, Lexington, Ky., was an award of excellence winner for the http://www.faithandvalues.com Web site. It was also named best in class among all Web sites that were honored by the RCC.
Lutheran Woman Today, the magazine of Women of the ELCA, won three awards of merit. Nancy Goldberger, editor, and Deborah Bogaert, managing editor and director for Bible studies, received awards of merit for single magazine article ("God's Family Reunion"), black-and-white photo series ("AIDS at 20") and single color photo ("A Heavy Metal Christian.").
RCC recognized several other Lutheran organizations and communicators with awards of merit for their work in communication:
+ Rex Paisley, ELCA Department for Communication, Chicago, for the http://www.elca.org Web site.
+ The Rev. Marguerite Rourk, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C., for "Southern Bulletin," in a category for local and regional newsletters.
+ The Rev. Ron Glusenkamp, the Rev. Catherine Malotky and Linda Renander, ELCA Board of Pensions, Minneapolis, for the organization's 2002 calendar, in a category for special print materials.
+ Linda Post Bushkofsky, Synod of Lakes and Prairies, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Bloomington, Minn., for "Synod School Closing" in a booklet category. Bushkofsky was recently named executive director of Women of the ELCA, a role she will assume this summer. -- -- --
