CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Peter Strommen was re-elected May 3 to a six-year term as bishop of the Northeastern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The election took place at the synod assembly May 3-5 in Duluth, Minn.
Strommen, 55, has been serving as bishop of the synod since he was first elected in 1996. He was re-elected on the first ballot for bishop with 358 votes. The Rev. Lyle E. Rossing, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hibbing, Minn., had 2 votes. Twelve other nominees each had one vote.
Strommen was born in Mora, Minn. In 1969, he received a bachelor's degree from Augsburg College, Minneapolis, one of 28 ELCA colleges and universities. He attended Yale University Divinity School, New Haven, Conn., and earned a master of divinity degree in 1973 from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., one of eight ELCA seminaries.
Before he became bishop, Strommen was pastor of First Lutheran Church, Duluth, for 13 years. He previously served as pastor of First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Oldham Lutheran Church, Oldham, S.D. He also was a hospital chaplain at Methodist Hospital, Minneapolis.
The ELCA Northeastern Minnesota Synod has 73,486 baptized members in 149 congregations. Its offices are in Duluth.
