Strobel Re-Elected ELCA Bishop of Northeastern Pennsylvania

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. David R. Strobel was re-elected bishop of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) May 31. Strobel was elected at the synod's assembly May 30-June 1 at Split Rock Resort and Conference Center, Lake Harmony, Pa.
Strobel, 56, was first elected bishop of the synod in 1996. He was re-elected on the second ballot with 527 of a possible 649 votes. The Rev. William W. Fairchild, Christ Lutheran Church, Conyngham, Pa., was second with 34 votes, and the Rev. Raymond C. Hittinger, Bethlehem, Pa., was third with 23 votes.
Before he became bishop, Strobel served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, Pa.; St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Allentown, Pa.; Zion Lutheran Church, Maxatawny, Pa., and Hope Lutheran Church, Hope Park, Pa.
Strobel earned a bachelor of arts degree from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and a master of divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, one of eight ELCA seminaries. He also attended the University of Chicago.
Strobel was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Bowers, Pa. He and his wife, Doris, are the parents of two adult children.
The ELCA Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod has 165,440 baptized members in 295 congregations. The synod office is in Wescosville.
