Bouman Re-Elected Lutheran Bishop of Metro New York

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Stephen P. Bouman was re-elected May 31 to a six-year term as bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He was re-elected at the synod assembly May 30-June 1 in Melville, N.Y.
Bouman, 55, has served as bishop of the synod since 1996. He was re-elected on the first ballot for bishop with 377 votes, over the Rev. Frederick J. Schumacher, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, White Plains, N.Y., with 32 votes. The Rev. Paul M. Britton, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Huntington Station, N.Y., was third with 10 votes. There were 40 nominees on the first ballot.
Prior to his election as bishop of the synod, Bouman had served as assistant to the bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod since 1992. In 1973, he was pastor of St. Jacobus Lutheran Church, Woodside (Queens), N.Y., before he became pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church, Jackson Heights (Queens), N.Y., in 1974. In 1982, he became pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bogota, N.J., and served there until he joined the synod staff.
Bouman was born in Melrose Park, Ill. In 1969, he earned a bachelor's degree from Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, Ind. He earned a master of divinity degree from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, in 1973, and a master of sacred theology degree from New York Theological Seminary, New York, N.Y., in 1978. In 1980, he earned a doctorate in ministry from New York Theological Seminary.
Bouman and his wife, Janet, are parents of three grown children.
The ELCA is organized into 65 synods with 5.13 million members. The Metropolitan New York Synod has 83,913 members in 227 congregations. Its offices are in New York City.
