CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The 2009 Churchwide Assembly of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is set for Aug. 17-
23, 2009, at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis,
Minn. A formal announcement of the 2009 site was made as the 2007
assembly ended Aug. 11.
The 2007 Churchwide Assembly, the chief legislative
authority of the ELCA, met here Aug. 6-11 at Navy Pier's Festival
Hall. About 2,000 people participated, including 1,069 ELCA
voting members. The theme for the biennial assembly was "Living
in God's Amazing Grace: Thanks be to God!"
In closing the 2007 assembly, the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA
presiding bishop, commended the 2007 churchwide assembly voting
members for being "stewards of unity in diversity."
"We have spoken to Iraq. We have spoken to HIV/AIDS. We have
renewed our commitment to world hunger. We have said: It's God's
work, but our hands," said Hanson.
