CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. James R. Stuck was elected May 15
to a second six-year term as bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA) Indiana-Kentucky Synod at its assembly
in Evansville, Ind.
Stuck, 56, was re-elected on the second ballot for bishop.
Stuck received 400 of 533 votes cast, the required 75 percent for
election. Second was the Rev. Timothy F. Hungler, Gethsemane
Lutheran Church, Lexington, Ky., with 48 votes; the Rev. Vicki T.
Garber, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills, Ky., was
third with 15 votes. There were 55 names on the nominating
ballot.
Stuck was elected bishop in 1998, succeeding the Rev. Ralph
A. Kempski, who retired. Before he was bishop, Stuck was pastor
of King of Glory Lutheran Church, Carmel, Ind. He also served as
pastor of ELCA congregations in New Waterford, Ohio, Saginaw,
Mich., and Michigan City, Ind. He was director of Camp
Frederick, a Lutheran outdoor ministry in Rogers, Ohio.
Stuck was born in Columbus, Ohio. In 1969 he earned a
bachelor's degree from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, one of
28 ELCA colleges and universities. He earned a master of
divinity degree in 1973 from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus,
one of eight ELCA seminaries, and was ordained in 1973. In 1992
Stuck earned a doctorate from the Graduate Theological
Foundation, Donaldson, Ind.
Stuck and his wife Kristine are parents of three grown
children.
The ELCA Indiana-Kentucky Synod has 79,493 baptized members
in 288 congregations. The synod office is in Indianapolis.
