Scholarships Awarded to Nine ELCA Students Studying Physics

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Nine students attending colleges and universities
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will receive
scholarships in the amount of $10,000 or $5,000 for the 2009-2010 school
year. The scholarships are provided by the ELCA Foundation through the
Rossing Fund for Physics Education Endowment.
Thomas D. Rossing, professor emeritus of physics, Northern Illinois
University, DeKalb, Ill., established the fund in 2005. He received his
bachelor's degree from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1950. Luther is
one of 28 ELCA colleges and universities.
The endowment provides scholarships to students studying physics at
ELCA colleges and universities. Four Rossing Physics Scholars will
receive $10,000 scholarships -- David Yager-Elorriaga, a senior at
Gettysburg (Pa.) College; Timothy Uher, a senior at Wittenberg
University, Springfield, Ohio; Bethany Jochim, a junior at Augustana
College, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Nathaniel Johnson, a junior at Augsburg
College, Minneapolis.
Five Honorable Mention Rossing Physics Scholars will receive $5,000
scholarships -- Curtis Lee, a senior at Texas Lutheran University,
Seguin; Shuhei Yamamoto, a senior at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa;
Christina McGahan, a junior at Gettysburg College; Talitha Muehlbrad, a
junior at Texas Lutheran University; and Kyle Weigand, a junior at
Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill.
The ELCA Foundation assists congregations and individuals in gift
planning that supports ministries of the ELCA.
