Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa., one of 28 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), reports that a group of 24 students, faculty and staff is spending the university's winter break in the Gulf Coast area to assist with disaster recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Hosanna Lutheran Church, Mandeville, La., located approximately 27 miles from New Orleans, is their host. The university is planning a follow-up trip during spring break in March and service trips to the region for years to come.
The Statesman Journal, Salem, Ore., reported Dec. 10 that the Rev. John S. Maas, Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Salem, spent a week before Christmas in the Gulf Coast area, providing pastoral care through Christus Victor Lutheran Church, Ocean Springs, Miss., to people involved in hurricane recovery there. He told the paper he learned of the volunteer opportunity through the ELCA Web site. Hosanna, Christ the Good Shepherd and Christus Victor are ELCA congregations.
