January 11, 2006

by John R. Brooks, ELCA News Service

The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will preach Jan. 18 during an annual commemoration honoring William Reed Huntington at Saint Peter Lutheran Church, Manhattan. Huntington, an Episcopal priest, authored the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral, an 1888 foundational document upon which all ecumenical dialogue between the Episcopal Church and other Christian churches takes place. Huntington was rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Manhattan.

The focus of this year's celebration is the full-communion relationship of the ELCA and the Episcopal Church. Joining Hanson as presider will be the Most Rev. Frank T. Griswold, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. Also participating will be the Rev. Stephen P. Bouman, bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan New York Synod; the Rev. Mark S. Sisk, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York; the Rev. Canon J. Robert Wright, professor of ecclesiastical history, General Theological Seminary, New York, and president of the Anglican Society; and the Rev. J. Donald Waring, rector of Grace Church, who will bring a loving cup which was presented to Huntington as a symbol of the continuing legacy of this visionary preacher and church leader. The commemoration service begins at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a dinner. To register for the dinner visit http://www.saintpeters.org on the Web.
