The Lenoir-Rhyne College board of trustees extended the contract
of Dr. Wayne B. Powell, college president, for three additional
years. Powell, 55, assumed office in December 2002 and was given
an initial contract through 2008. The board's action extends his
contract to 2011.
The college, located in Hickory, N.C., is one of 28 colleges and
universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It
has made significant strides in enrollment and financial growth
during the past three years, according to a college news release.
Traditional student enrollment grew from 1,085 to 1,327, an
increase of more than 22 percent, with total enrollment reaching
1,568 in 2005. During the same period total annual revenues for
the college increased from about $22.7 million to $28.2 million,
up 24 percent. The college's endowment grew from $39.2 million to
$46.3 million, an increase of 18 percent.
