With some 500 baseball fans in attendance Jan. 28, California
Lutheran University (CLU), Thousand Oaks, Calif., formally
dedicated George "Sparky" Anderson Field, the new home of the CLU
Kingsmen baseball team. The field is named in honor of Anderson,
a Thousand Oaks resident and National Baseball Hall of Fame
member, who managed the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers to
World Series titles.
Anderson, 71, is a longtime supporter of the CLU baseball
program. He helped raise funds for the program through golf
tournaments and spends time with the team during practices and
games. The weekend included a tribute dinner attended by
longtime Tigers' broadcaster Ernie Harwell; current and former
major league managers Mike Scioscia, Don Baylor and Tommy
Lasorda; and former Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell.
