Pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) have
spent an average 8.32 years in their current call, according to a
graph prepared Jan. 27 by ELCA Research and Evaluation. Numbers
were rounded for the chart, but not for calculating the median,
mean and standard deviation. Statistics of 10,814 clergy were
included in the chart.
Statistics from Jan. 15 show the median length of stay is six
years. Most pastors have spent less than the average 8.32 years
in their current calls, but at least one pastor has been in the
same call for 53 years. Nearly 1,200 pastors have spent two
years in their current call, and approximately 1,100 are in their
third year.
