ELCA continues to raise millions of dollars for Katrina relief

February 22, 2006

by Melissa Ramirez Cooper, ELCA News Service

To date the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has
collected about $24 million to support Hurricane Katrina relief
operations. With more than $3 billion raised nationwide thus
far, the ELCA is listed as one of the larger organizations
garnering more than $10 million to support survivors of the
hurricane, according to the Feb. 23 issue of The Chronicle of
Philanthropy.

While the ELCA has raised sufficient gifts to fund a multi-year
disaster response plan in the U.S. Gulf Coast, "we are
encouraging members and congregations of the church to continue
giving" in response to "disasters that are less well-known or
have yet to strike," said Kathryn Sime, director, ELCA World
Hunger and Disaster Appeal.
