"Our Calling in Education: A First Draft of a Social Statement"
is now available to the 4.9 million members of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Issued by ELCA Church in
Society, the 63-page document is available as a free download
(PDF format) on the church's Web site and will be mailed to
10,585 congregations of the ELCA and others this month. Adopted
by ELCA churchwide assemblies, social statements are social
policy documents that address significant social issues.
The ELCA Task Force on Education has called on Lutherans to study
and comment on the first draft of the social statement. It will
receive responses to the draft through Oct. 15. Responses will
help the task force shape the proposed statement. The 2001 ELCA
Churchwide Assembly called for a social statement on education.
The task force, first assembled in 2003, will develop its final
version of a proposed social statement by early 2007 for
consideration by the ELCA Churchwide Assembly here Aug. 6-12,
2007.
