Young people across the United States raised more than $4.2
million through "Souper Bowl of Caring," a national faith-based
effort aimed at raising millions of dollars for hunger-fighting
organizations. That number includes $598,728 collected by
Lutherans.
Some congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
arranged for young people to collect food and dollars in large
soup pots as parishioners left worship on Feb. 5 -- the NFL's
"Super Bowl Sunday." Organizers reported their results on or
near game day at the Souper Bowl of Caring Web site, so that a
national total can be determined. Some ELCA congregations
contributed donations to the ELCA World Hunger and Disaster
Appeal, local food pantries and homeless shelters. No money is
sent to Souper Bowl of Caring, Columbia, S.C.
