Milwaukee-area ELCA members taking part in Lent '10 to 1' campaign

Milwaukee-area ELCA members taking part in Lent '10 to 1' campaign

March 14, 2006

by John R. Brooks, ELCA News Service

During Lent members of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) are participating
in the synod's "10 to 1" campaign to call attention to world
hunger and poverty. For example, members are being asked to give
$10 each to combat hunger locally and globally; or to write 10
letters to elected officials, advocating for programs that fight
hunger and poverty; or to pray during the last 10 minutes of each
lunch hour to call attention to people living with hunger and
poverty; or to consider tithing to the church, said the Rev. Paul
Stumme-Diers, bishop, ELCA Greater Milwaukee Synod.

"I have set it forth as a Lenten discipline that we can all enter
into communally," Stumme-Diers said. Funds the synod raises
through the campaign will be shared among several agencies and
churches -- 25 percent is designated for Lutheran World Relief;
25 percent goes to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal; 30 percent will
be sent to synod partner churches in El Salvador and Tanzania;
and the remaining 20 percent will be distributed locally through
congregations and ministries to combat hunger in southeast
Wisconsin, the bishop said.
