The Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
(ELCA) affirmed Lutheran Men in Mission (LMM) as the men's
ministry of the ELCA and its "desire for deeper connection with
this church." The council is the ELCA's board of directors and
serves as the legislative authority of the church between
churchwide assemblies. The council met April 1-2 in Chicago.
LMM's Seventh Triennial Assembly held July 21-22, 2005, in North
Charleston, S.C., passed a resolution asking that the "LMM board
pursue an independent corporate structure that provides for
optimal ministry to men in the congregations and communities that
surround them."
The ELCA Church Council affirmed LMM's plans to form "a nonprofit
corporation to further ministries to men in the ELCA" and to
maintain a close relationship with the church through ELCA
Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission. The council
recognized the authority of LMM's triennial assembly and board of
directors "under the constitution, by-laws and personnel policies
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America." The council
referred the process of incorporating LMM to the council's legal
and constitutional review committee.
