ELCA Council receives update on 'Renewing Worship'

April 7, 2006

by Melissa Ramirez Cooper, ELCA News Service

"Evangelical Lutheran Worship," a new primary worship resource for the church, will be published in paper and electronic formats in October 2006. The ELCA Church Council viewed a 13-minute DVD that introduces the new worship resource when it met April 1-2 in Chicago. The council is the ELCA's board of directors and serves as the legislative authority of the church between churchwide assemblies.

Hosted by the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop, the DVD is part of an introductory kit congregations of the ELCA will receive in September. Each of the 65 synods of the ELCA has a team of people "to introduce the new worship book," said the Rev. Michael Burk, ELCA director for worship and liturgical resources. Evangelical Lutheran Worship is the outcome of "Renewing Worship," a five-year process in which the whole church was invited to discuss, explore, review and engage with new worship materials.
