Seeking to expand their global experiences, about 16 Lutheran
campus ministry staff members are planning a two-week travel
seminar to Namibia and South Africa, Aug. 1-15, 2006. The
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is present on the
campuses of more than 180 state and private colleges and
universities, with cooperating congregations in campus ministry
at an additional 400 campuses nationwide. There are 28 colleges
and universities of the ELCA. ELCA Campus Ministry is sponsoring
the seminar.
With less than 2 million people, Lutherans make up at least 50
percent of the Namibian population. Participants in the travel
seminar may have the opportunity to visit with ministerial and
parliamentary representatives of the Namibian government, visit
with Lutheran church leaders about challenges facing churches in
Namibia, attend worship at a Lutheran church and more. In South
Africa, participants may meet with Lutheran church leaders about
the changing shape of the church there, meet with staff of
nongovernmental organizations to learn about the social and
political situation in the Western Cape, a visit to Cape Town and
more.
