The Rev. Kevin S. Kanouse, 52, was elected to a second six-year
term as bishop of the Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synod of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) at its assembly
April 28-30 at Killeen, Texas. He received 252 of 285 votes on
the first ballot for bishop April 28. There were 22 nominees on
that ballot.
Kanouse was born in Berwick, Pa. In 1975 he graduated from
Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa., and in 1980 he earned a
master of divinity degree from Lutheran Theological Seminary at
Gettysburg (LTSG), Pa. Susquehanna is one of 28 ELCA colleges
and universities; LTSG is one of eight ELCA seminaries. Ordained
in 1980, Kanouse served as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church,
Penryn, Pa., and Advent Lutheran Church, Arlington, Texas.
Kanouse was first elected bishop in 2000 and succeeded the Rev.
Mark B. Herbener, who retired. Kanouse and his wife, Billye
Jean, are parents of two adult sons and reside in Arlington.
The ELCA Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synod includes 35,301
baptized members in 113 congregations in the northern portions of
Louisiana and Texas. The synod office is in Dallas.
