Four seniors at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., plus one
alumnus, have been named Fulbright Scholars for 2006-07,
according to a St. Olaf College news release. Seniors Brennan
Decker, Russell Johnson, Rose Keimig and Brendan Mrosak, plus
alumnus Brian Anderson, Class of 2005, are among 22 St. Olaf
College students awarded Fulbright grants in the past four years.
One other student, Meredith Johnson, has been named an alternate
for the grant.
Decker, a biology and chemistry double major, Oshkosh, Wis., will
travel to Pecs, Hungary, where he will study the cell protein
actin. Johnson, a chemistry and bimolecular science double major,
Shoreview, Minn., plans to research the structure of malaria
parasites in Melbourne, Australia. Asian studies major Keimig,
who plays third base for the Ole fast pitch softball team, will
study the relationships between Chinese fast-pitch players and
their coaches. Keimig, Princeton, Minn., will audit classes at
Beijing University, Beijing, China. Mrosak, an Asian studies,
math and economics triple major, Plymouth, Minn., will study at
the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental Engineering Research
Institute in northern China, where he will focus on water
consumption of area households. His research will contribute to
water allocation studies along the Shiyang river basin. Anderson
will enroll in the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology, Trondheim, where he will take classes in neuroscience
and Norwegian. He also will research the tobacco budworm, which
may help lead to a better understanding of how sensory
information impacts behavior.
Fulbright awards are granted for a variety of educational
activities. The Fulbright Program was conceived by former U.S.
Sen. J. William Fulbright to promote "mutual understanding
between the people of the United States and the people of other
countries of the world." St. Olaf College is one of 28 ELCA
