by John R. Brooks, ELCA News Service
The Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA) announced May 23 that the synod council will
appoint an interim bishop for the synod to begin Aug. 1. This
follows the previous week's announcement that the Rev. Marcus J.
Miller, synod bishop since 1995, will step down to become
president of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia,
S.C., effective Aug. 15.
The synod council met May 20 to make plans for the leadership
transition. It will appoint the interim bishop in consultation
with the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop.
The synod announced that a special synod assembly to elect a
permanent successor to Miller will be held Dec. 1-2 in a location
to be determined. The ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod includes
86,353 Lutherans in 207 congregations in 20 counties of northeast
Ohio.
