Dr. Theodore L. Fredrickson, president of Capital University,
Columbus, Ohio, announced his retirement June 2, marking the end
of nearly four decades in higher education. Capital is one of 28
colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA). The university's board of trustees named Dr.
Denvy Bowman, provost, as interim president. Bowman came to
Capital in 2003 as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He
was named provost in 2006 following a national search.
Fredrickson, born in Northfield, Minn., previously served as dean
of the Graduate School of Business at the University of St.
Thomas, Minneapolis. Fredrickson was selected to be Capital's
14th president in 2001, according to a Capital news release.
"During his tenure, Ted has focused on extending Capital's
influence within the Central Ohio community and has helped to
forge relationships beyond the campus' borders that will serve
the university well in the years ahead," said Roger Davis, chair,
board of trustees. Fredrickson and his wife Diane plan to return
to Minnesota and look forward to spending more time with their
family, the university release said.
The board of trustees met June 5 to further consider the search
for Capital's next president. Capital is the oldest and largest
university affiliated with the ELCA.
