Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., will host the annual
Convocation of Teaching Theologians of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA) Aug. 11-13. Gustavus Adolphus is one of
28 colleges and universities of the ELCA. Under the theme
"Lutherans and Theological Method: Perennial Questions and
Contemporary Challenges," participants will explore current
issues and how the Lutheran theological discipline can embrace
both its heritage and the call to service in a diverse world.
Approximately 70 ELCA theologians and professors at colleges and
seminaries were invited to attend the event. There are eight ELCA
seminaries.
The convocation will include four plenary sessions intended to
raise issues and encourage dialogue. Small group discussions
will follow each session. Presenters include: Dr. Thomas
Christenson, Capital University, Columbus, Ohio; the Rev. Arland
J. Hultgren, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.; the Rev. Leonard
M. Hummel, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa.; the
Rev. Gordon A. Jensen, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan, Canada; Dr. Colleen M. Jacks, Gustavus Adolphus
College; the Rev. Jonathan P. Standjord, director for theological
education, ELCA Vocation and Education, Chicago; Dr. Marit
Trelstad, Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash.; and Dr.
Aana M. Vigen, Loyola University, Chicago.
The event is sponsored by Gustavus Adolphus, St. Olaf College,
Northfield, Minn., and the Association of Teaching Theologians of
the ELCA.
