Lutheran ethicists to discuss human sexuality

December 14, 2006

by Melissa Ramirez Cooper, ELCA News Service

The 2007 Annual Gathering of Lutheran Ethicists will take place
Jan. 3-5 at the Catholic Conference Formation Center in Dallas.
Ethicists, pastors, graduate students and others from the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will address the
topic of human sexuality.

Human sexuality is an important concern among Lutheran ethicists,
according to the Rev. Ronald W. Duty, assistant director for
studies, ELCA Church in Society. He said the gathering's topic
is related to the ELCA's work on the development of a social
statement on human sexuality. A proposed social statement on
human sexuality is due in early 2009.

"Papers and presentations at the gathering will help to inform
the larger discussion of human sexuality in the ELCA" because "we
will be joined by several members of the Task Force for ELCA
Studies on Sexuality, which is working on the social statement.
Papers from the presentations will also be considered for
publication in the 'Journal of Lutheran Ethics,'" said Duty. The
gathering will include presentations by authors, seminary
professors, theologians and others. On Jan. 5 participants will
attend portions of the Society of Christian Ethics Annual
Meeting, Jan. 4-7.
