ELCA presiding bishop asks, 'What is the unfinished work of freedom?'

July 3, 2013

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- As this nation embarks on a celebration of
Independence Day, the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), said the freedoms we
celebrate today came with great sacrifice and continue to generate
controversy.
In a pastoral video message to the more than 4-million-member ELCA,
Hanson contextualizes the recent Supreme Court decisions and
Congressional actions, as well as the 50th anniversary of the civil
rights movement and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg by
asking, “What does all of this mean in the work of freedom and justice
that has now been bequeathed to us?”
