A Message From Bishop Eaton for the Fifth Anniversary of George Floyd’s Murder

May 16, 2025

CHICAGO — May 25 marks the fifth anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. In observance of this day, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has issued a video message addressing the “horrific act that revealed the deadly reality of racism in the United States for many across the world.

“Racism, one of many tools of white supremacy, is not just personal prejudice — it is a sin that distorts God’s image in all of us, and it stands against the gospel we proclaim,” said Eaton. “As the ELCA, we confess this sin, and we are committed to the work of dismantling white supremacy in our church and society.”

The fifth annual Rise & Remember Festival, celebrating Floyd’s “angel-versary,” will be held at George Floyd Square (38th Street and Chicago Avenue) in Minneapolis, May 23-25. ELCA Racial Justice Ministries and ELCA African Descent Ministries invite people to join them for a gospel music concert and candlelight vigil at the square on May 25.
