ELCA observes World Malaria Day with $250,000 campaign appeal

In observance of World Malaria Day April 25, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is striving to raise $250,000 by May 2 to help begin anti-malaria work in Namibia, where 73 percent of the population is at risk of contracting the deadly disease.

ELCA awards grants to support U.S. anti-hunger ministries, organizations

In an effort to support hunger-fighting organizations in the United States, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) awarded 401 grants totaling nearly $1 million through its ELCA World Hunger program. The annual domestic hunger grants support ELCA congregations, social ministry organizations and community-based nonprofits working to address poverty, hunger and related social justice issues.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton asked the U.S. Senate in an April 8 letter to consider legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour as part of an overall strategy to reduce poverty in the United States.

ELCA Church Council receives final report on ‘ecology’ of ELCA

ELCA young adults commit to working for gender justice

One critical understanding they came away with is that without social and economic change, gender inequality continues to grow.

ELCA bishops to meet with congressional leaders on Capitol Hill

Thirty-two bishops representing 65 synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will meet with congressional leaders on Capitol Hill April 2. The meetings will focus on the ELCA’s commitment to advocate for public policy that creates opportunities to overcome poverty, promote peace and justice, and care for creation.

Dialogue between U.S. Christian, Jewish leaders resumes

Christian and Jewish leaders from the United States have committed to "developing an effective and ongoing national dialogue" during a March 27 summit in New York City. Among the Christian leaders were the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, ELCA presiding bishop, and the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, former ELCA presiding bishop who co-convened the summit along with Rabbi Steve Gutow, president and CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.

Robin Steinke named president of Luther Seminary

The Rev. Robin J. Steinke, Gettysburg, Pa., has been named president of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., effective June 1. Luther is one of eight ELCA seminaries.

Lloyd Svendsbye, a founding member of the ELCA, dies

Two of the 26 colleges and universities of the ELCA have named new presidents: Rebecca M. Bergman will become the 17th president of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., and Paula J. Carlson will become the 10th president of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Peter Perella, ELCA worship director, dies

The Rev. Peter J. L. Perella, 35, director for worship formation and liturgical resources at the ELCA churchwide organization, died Feb. 24 of sinus cancer. The funeral will be held March 2 at 3:00 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Lancaster, Pa.

Lutheran Disaster Response provides relief for the displaced in South Sudan

The ELCA will provide $700,000 in humanitarian assistance to help support those affected by the violence in South Sudan. The funds will be disbursed through Lutheran Disaster Response-International to The Lutheran World Federation.

ELCA presiding bishop asks U.S. government to support hospital in Jerusalem
