Dr. Teresa Smallwood

Dr. Teresa L. Smallwood earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law, a Master of Divinity from Howard University School of Divinity and a doctorate at Chicago Theological Seminary. She was the postdoctoral fellow and associate director of the Public Theology and Racial Justice Collaborative at Vanderbilt Divinity School. She is licensed and ordained, serving on the ministerial staff of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tenn. She is the James Franklin Kelly and Hope Eyster Kelly Associate Professor of Public Theology and vice president and dean of academic affairs at United Lutheran Seminary, Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pa. She recently completed Public Theology and Violent Rhetoric Examined in a Queer Womanist Critical Ethnography (Bloomsbury 2025).
