Lori Kochanski

About

Lori Kochanski is a creative professional who lives in Albany, N.Y. Currently, she is a crisis caseworker for the Albany Police Department and a fiber artist. She practices art as an act of mindful resistance as well as a way to be in community with others. In her studio at the Albany Barn, the Riparian Zone Studio, she uses weaving as her primary medium for telling new stories with old things. Lori leads workshops and large-scale community weaving projects as a way to connect people with each other. In 2018, to mark the anniversary of the ordination of women in the ELCA, Lori started her project “50 Women, 50 Stories, 50 Stoles: A Meditation on Women of the Cloth.” Women who participate in the project send her clothing along with the item’s stories. Lori weaves them into a liturgical stole and then returns the new piece of art to the women for use in their daily work. Through this ever-evolving, non-geographic art show, Lori has created over 25 liturgical stoles for women who identify as female leaders in the church.

Lori has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa., and a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, New Haven, Conn. She also earned her Certificate in Spiritual Direction from Kairos School of Spiritual Direction, Lancaster, Pa. In 2001, she was ordained in the ELCA and has served a variety of calls in both Pennsylvania and New York. Most recently, Lori served as an assistant to the bishop in the Upstate New York Synod.
