2022 ELCA Churchwide Assembly action on the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church

“…To direct the Church Council to establish a Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church comprised of leaders of diverse representation from all three expressions that, working in consultation with the Conference of Bishops and the Church Council, shall reconsider the statements of purpose for each of the expressions of this church, the principles of its organizational structure, and all matters pertaining thereunto, being particularly attentive to our shared commitment to dismantle racism, and will present its findings and recommendations to the 2025 Churchwide Assembly in preparation for a possible reconstituting convention to be called under the rules for a special meeting of the Churchwide Assembly.” [CA22.01.06]

Seventh Meeting of the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church

The Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church (CRLC) met in person in Chicago on August 8-10, 2024. Each meeting opened with conversation, prayer, and holy reflection on our work together.

August 8:

• The meeting opened with worship and Holy Communion.
• The CRLC received a refresher on the commission’s internal covenant.
• The Reverend Lisa Heffernan, the Coordinator of ELCA Disability Ministries, was welcomed and introduced herself.
• The CRLC received updates from the Church Council & a subcommittee on the progress of the DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) audit.
• The All Ears Committee presented the findings from the survey distributed during the 2024 Youth & Young Adult Gatherings. The committee also presented the findings from a survey distributed through ELCA Ministries of Diverse Cultures and Communities.

August 9:

• The Reverend Louise Johnson and the Reverend Ernie Hinojosa of the ELCA Vision Team presented what work they are completing that is in line with the work of the CRLC. The CRLC discussed how both teams can assist one another.
• The Why and What Committee presented their work, leading the CRLC in an exercise discussing the definitions of different parts of the ELCA according to the ELCA, Synod, and Congregation Constitutions.
• The Who Are We Committee led the CRLC in a discussion about constitutional language updates. The committee also presented updates on their examination of the name of our denomination, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
• The How Are We Governed Committee provided a rough outline of the current governance structures of the church and began discussion by the full CRLC of matters relating to accountability, autonomy versus uniformity, and the need for structural flexibility.

August 10:

• The Who Are We Committee presented a draft of a constitutional language update specifically for related institutions, organizations, and ministries (RIOMs). The CRLC discussed and provided feedback for the Committee to review further.
• The How Are We Governed Committee presented draft proposals of possible changes to governance structures. The CRLC discussed and provided feedback for the Committee to review further.
• The Planning and Report Committee presented a refresher on the documents that Committees should use to present their work to be included in the CRLC final report. The Committee also updated the CRLC’s timeline to ensure all work is being completed in a timely fashion and give deadline reminders.
• The Communications Committee discussed the strategies used to spread the survey at the 2024 Youth & Young Adult Gatherings. The Committee also presented an update on how the final CRLC report can be shared with the wider ELCA community.
• The seventh meeting of the Commission for a Renewed Lutheran Church closed with worship and prayer.

La Asamblea de toda la Iglesia de la IELA 2022 acción en la Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada

“... Ordenar al Consejo de la Iglesia que establezca una Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada compuesta por líderes de diversa representación de las tres expresiones que, trabajando en consulta con la Conferencia de Obispos y el Consejo de la Iglesia, reconsidere las declaraciones de propósito para cada una de las expresiones de esta iglesia, los principios de su estructura organizativa y todos los asuntos concernientes a esto, prestando atención particular a nuestro compromiso compartido de desmantelar el racismo, y presente sus hallazgos y recomendaciones a la Asamblea de toda la Iglesia de 2025 en preparación para una posible convención de reconstitución que se convocará conforme a las reglas para llevar a cabo una reunión especial de la Asamblea de toda la Iglesia”. Séptima reunión de la Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada

La Comisión para una Iglesia Luterana Renovada (CRLC, por sus siglas en inglés) se reunió en persona en Chicago del 8 al 10 de agosto de 2024. Cada reunión comenzó con una conversación, oración y una santa reflexión sobre nuestro trabajo juntos.

8 de agosto:

• La reunión comenzó con adoración y Santa Comunión.
• La CRLC recibió un repaso sobre el pacto interno de la comisión.
• Se le dio la bienvenida a la Reverenda Lisa Heffernan, Coordinadora de los Ministerios de Discapacidad de la IELA, y ella se presentó a sí misma.
• La CRLC recibió actualizaciones del Consejo de la Iglesia y de un subcomité sobre el progreso de la auditoría de DEIA (Diversidad, Equidad, Inclusión, y Accesibilidad; DEIA, por sus siglas en inglés).
