About Presiding Bishop-elect Yehiel Curry

The Rev. Yehiel Curry was elected as the next presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Phoenix, Ariz., on July 30, 2025. He will begin this role on Oct. 1, 2025, and be installed on Oct. 4 in Minneapolis.
Currently, he serves as bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan Chicago Synod, where he leads a synod staff and 160 congregations by providing pastoral care, preaching, teaching, administering sacraments, and overseeing ordinations and installations. He was elected synod bishop in 2019 and reelected in spring 2025. Curry chaired the ELCA Conference of Bishops, fostering ecumenical relationships and theological engagement across the Lutheran communion.
Previously, Curry served as the mission developer (2007–2012) and pastor (2013–2019) of Shekinah Chapel Lutheran Church in Riverdale, Ill. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., and a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He and his wife, LaShonda, are the proud parents of three daughters.

The ELCA Church Council is responsible for ensuring the installation of churchwide officers. Churchwide organization staff create the worship service, collaborating with their leadership and the council and consulting with the presiding bishop-elect.
An installation ritualizes the beginning of a particular ministry or responsibility. In this case, the church will install an ordained pastor into the office of presiding bishop. Common to most installation rites are these elements: presentation of the individual or group to be installed, questions to the person(s) being installed, questions to the worshiping assembly regarding their support, a blessing by the presiding minister and acclamation by the assembly. Prayers for those newly installed follow during the prayers of intercession.
The Rite of Installation of a Bishop is used for an ordained pastor who has been called by a synod or churchwide assembly to the office of bishop for a particular term of service. In accordance with the canons of the Council of Nicaea, three bishops in historic succession join in prayer and in the laying on of hands when a bishop is installed for the first time. Because Rev. Curry has already been installed as a bishop, in 2019 in the Metropolitan Chicago Synod, the laying on of hands and associated prayer will be modified for this installation.
The current presiding bishop presides at the installation of a new presiding bishop. When that is not possible, a synod bishop designated by the Church Council serves as presiding minister.
The pectoral cross is the only symbol of the office of bishop that is held in common throughout the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is presented at all installations of a bishop, including the presiding bishop.
The six-year term of the new presiding bishop begins on the first day of the third month after their election. Bishop Curry was elected presiding bishop in July, so his term begins on Oct. 1.
